Why Nigeria’s New Indigenous Airline Must Fail – Oby Ezekwesili
Nigeria’s former minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili is one of the personality in the country’s political landscape who has refused to subscribe to the new development of the Federal Government after unveiling Nigeria Airline, the new national carrier.
Shortly after the minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika launched the airline at the Farnborough International Airshow in London on Wednesday, Ezekwesili strongly criticized the move as she described it a ‘project of waste’.
In a series of tweets, she bore her mind which is divergent to what the Federal Government maintained will only be 5% funded by the administration and 95% sponsored by private sponsors.
“I actually believed that at some point the FG would have “advised itself” and known that the so called “National Carrier project” is a waste. sadly not so as they are determined on what is clearly a wrong priority. It shall fail. For the sake of the country, it must fail”
“The Aviation sector saddens me greatly. This is a sector that with the right policy and regulatory framework complemented with quality safety standards and security infrastructure will surely attract global capital. But no. Lovers of statist system want to give us “National Carrier”, she noted.
She continued by saying Nigeria lost the benefit of its market-size comparative advantage to be West Africa’s Travel Hub precisely because of policy, regulatory, safety and standards failures of the Aviation Sector. According to her “Failure of Public Sector begets Failure of Private Sector!”
The national carrier according to the minister of aviation will be private sector led and driven.
Sirika said “It is a business, not a social service. The government will not be involved in running it or deciding who runs it. The investors will have full responsibility for this.”
“Nigeria has unfortunately not been a serious player in Aviation for a long time. We used to be a dominant player, through Nigeria Airways, but sadly not anymore.
“The Nigerian government will not own more than 5% (maximum) of the new national carrier. The government will not be involved in running it or deciding who run it”, he had established.
