ONDO: Confusion as Lawmakers Protest Against Deputy Speaker’s Impeachment

The crisis in the Ondo state house of Assembly appears to have taken a new dimension as 9 of the 26 honourable members of the House have dissociated themselves from the impeachment of the deputy speaker, Iroju Ogundeji.

The lawmakers are Iroju Ogundeji, Jamiu Maito, Rasheed Elegbeleye, Tomide Akinribido, Samuel Edamisan, Favour Tomomewo, Festus Akingbaso, Adewale Williams and Torhukerhijo success.

A letter dated 24 November, addressed to the Speaker of the House, David Oleyelogun, had the signatures of the nine members cutting across the three senatorial districts of the state.

On Tuesday, 20 lawmakers reportedly signed Iroju’s impeachment notice.

In an interview with journalists, One of the lawmakers, Adewale Williams representing Ondo-West constituency II, said they were not aware of any allegation against the former deputy speaker.

He described the purported impeachment of Iroju as null and void, insisting that the leadership of the assembly do not have the required number of lawmakers to impeach him.

Adewale described the impeachment as illegal and unconstitutional, while adding that Iroju remain the genuine deputy speaker
