Senator Elisha Abbo Dumps PDP, joins APC
Senator Elisha Abbo, the senator representing Adamawa North in the Nigerian Senate has decamped from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Elisha Abbo announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Senate, presented by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan during Wednesday’s plenary session.
In the letter, Senator Abbo explained that his decision to defect to the APC is because of the mismanagement of the PDP in Adamawa state by Governor Umaru Fintiri.
Senator Abbo has been in the news for assaulting a woman in an adult toy shop in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama, earlier in September, awarded N50 million damages against Senator Abbo, to be paid as compensation to Osimibibra Warmate, a female attendant at a sex-toy shop, whom he assaulted.
Justice Samira Bature gave the order in her judgment on the fundamental rights enforcement suit instituted by Warmate against the senator.
Earlier on July 3, 2019, the lawmaker was caught on camera physically assaulting a woman in Abuja, two months after he allegedly committed the act.
I guess what people do in their private lives is really a matter for them. But when a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is found guilty of assault and asked to pay N50m damages, one has to ask whether or not he is really distinguished.
Under the Nigerian Constitution, a federal Senator represents the people in one-third of a State. That is an enormous privilege in a nation of close to 200 million people.
Why can’t these people show more integrity?
Furthermore, I don’t think he has satisfied the requirements that permit changing your party as an elected representative, with the flimsy excuse tendered by Senator Abbo.
