Mass Failure As WAEC Releases 2017 Results
The West African Examination Council WACE has released its 2017 West African Examination Council Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates (November/December) as majority of the candidates failed the yearly exam.
Of the 133,223 candidates that sat for the exam this year, only 34,664 representing 26.01 percent obtained a minimum of five credits in five subjects and above including English and Mathematics.
The Head of WAEC, Nigeria National office Olu Adenipekun announced this saying the percentage of candidates in this category in 2015 and 2016 was 28.59 percent and 38.50 percent respectively.
According to him, the results 14,756 candidates representing 11.07 percent are being withheld in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.
‘The cases are being investigated and reports of the investigations will be presented to the appropriate committee of the council in due course for consideration’, he said.
