M.K.O Abiola: Fani-Kayode Reacts As Buhari Declares June 12 New Democracy Day

Chief Femi Fani-Kayode says he is surprised as President Muhammadu Buhari declares June 12 the new democracy day in Nigeria.

May 29 will now cease to be the commemorated Democracy day effective from 2019.

In a very rare occasion, the opposition party chieftain applauded the president for doing what was considered overdue in the history of Nigeria’s democratic rule.

He wrote on his Twitter saying:

“I commend @MBuhari for announcing June 12th as our new Democracy Day. This is long overdue and I am pleasantly surprised.I also commend him for honoring Chief MKO Abiola, the winner of the June 12th 1993 presidential election, with the posthumus award of GCON.This is great news!”

The past ruling party Peoples Democratic Party had declared May 29 the National Public Holiday for Democray day but ignored the historic June 12 incident which witnessed the arguably ‘most free and fair election in Nigeria.
