UPDATE: Why More Cows May Die On Our Land – Ondo Community Chief

More cows will die mysteriously in Ijare Community of Ifedore local government in Ondo state, if traditional rites are not done to appease the angry gods of the land, a high chief has revealed.

Nigerian Cable News online reported how 36 cows were struck to death by thunder in the late hours of Saturday in Ijare, a community in Ondo central senatorial district of Ondo state.

Following the incident, the people of the community have started a traditional cleansing, considered necessary, over the death of the cows at Okeowa hills.

The step became necessary in order not incur the wrath of the gods.

The Sapetu of Ijare, High Chief Wemimo Olaniran disclosed this in an interview with journalists.

He said if traditional rites are not done, more cows would vanish from the community.

His words:

“Our monarch must visit Okeowa hills to appease the gods to avoid their wraths”

The people also called on the state government to assist them in evacuating the 36 cows killed by lightning on a sacred hill to prevent outbreak of diseases.

The scene of the incident has become a Mecca of sort, for people living in and outside the community.

But the place is gradually becoming a no-go area, due to offensive odour from the dead cows.

Members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture visited Oke-Owa hill to ascertain what was responsible for the incident.

Led by the Speaker, Bamidele Oleyelogun, some members of the committee said drastic steps must be taken to address the situation before it gets out of hand.

Nigerian Cable News online also reliably gathered that the Ondo state government is taking steps to fumigate the carcass of the animals, to prevent avoidable epidemics in the community.
