UPDATE: Senators Blow Hot, Threaten Actions Over IGP’s Refusal To Honour Summon

By Gabriel Ogunjobi

The Nigerian Senate has condemned the series of non-appearance by the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim before the National Assembly.

For three times from April 25, the Police boss failed to avail himself before the lawmakers and answer questions pertaining to the constant killings in Nigeria and the issue about Senator Dino Melaye’s embarrassing arrest.

At plenary on Wednesday, the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, expressed displeasure over the refusal of the IGP to appear before the senate.

“it is very unusual for a public servant to act like this. I have never seen this before anywhere in the world, we need to take a decision because this affects security in the entire country”, he noted.

Senator Emmanuel Bwacha buttressed that the act is unacceptable and disrespectful.

He charged the Senate to take immediate and serious action.

“What the IGP is doing is not against the Senate but against the presidency that appointed him into office, it’s unfortunate. The IG is not competent to be in the office”, Senator Isah Misau, who is the spokesperson of the Senate, stated.

Senator Enyinaya Abaribe said the absence of IGP is a clear indication that the democracy is losing its grip in Nigeria.

Quoting as said:

“What is happening today in Nigeria shows that democracy is dying bit by bit and also shows the abuse of power and office by the IG. What the IG is doing in the eyes of the world, shows that there is no respect for the law”, Abaribe established.

On the other hand, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki also described the act  this as disrespectful to the institution and constitutional authority.

“That the refusal of the IG to appear before an investigative committee as also ruled by a court of competent jurisdiction is a great danger to our democracy. Therefore the Senate resolves to declare the IGP as an enemy of democracy and not fit to hold any public office within and outside Nigeria”, says Senate President.

The Leadership of the Senate has therefore been mandated to look into the matter for further necessary action.
