UPDATE: Police Reveals Reasons Behind Akure Explosion
The Akure Saturday early Morning explosion was caused by a truck legally conveying a consignment of explosive materials to a quarry company in Edo State, Police in Ondo state has revealed.
Speaking with journalists at the site of the incident, the Ondo state Police commissioner said the explosives were duly escorted by Men of the Police Ordinance department.
He added that the vehicle conveying the explosives developed a fault and they tried to move away from residential areas to address the fault.
He also said they noticed that smoke was coming out from the vehicle’s engine which later resulted to fire, consequently causing the explosion at the airport junction, Akure, Ondo State Capital.
The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on Saturday.
Nigerian cable news online gathered that a total of thirteen persons have been taken to the hospital after sustaining various degrees of injury as a result of the incident.
Also speaking on the incident after his visit to the cite, the Ondo state Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu said security men are expected to codon-off the area as soon as possible, to be able to evacuate the conveying truck still buried maters down the ground level.
