Youths of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the southwest zone of Nigeria, under the auspices of the PDP South-West Integrity Youth Group (PS-WIYG) have Decleard their support for the governor Wike led integrity group of the Party.
The Youths, in a press conference held today in Akure, urged the leadership of the party to grant the request of the integrity group and unite the party before it is too late.
The PDP crisis, according to the group convener, Mr. Fola Awodola, will spell doom for the party at the next general election, if not quickly resolved.
Below is the text of the press statement, unedited;
Good morning, everyone.
This press conference will be very brief as we just want to set some records straight.
It is no longer news that the presidential candidate of our great party, the PDP, has continued to see the struggle of the INTEGRITY governors to ensure equity and fairness in our party as a personal issue, which, to him, has no effect on his candidacy or his ability to win the presidential election for our party by February, 2023.
That is why we are gathered here today, under the auspices of the PDP South-West Integrity Youth Group (PS-WIYG), to declare our support for the INTEGRITY group as they are the only voice of reasoning in our party at the moment.
It is our belief that the inability of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to unite the party after the presidential primaries which produced him against the morally justifiable position that the presidency should return to the south, reaffirms the talk by a section of the country that the party, and in extension the right to continue to rule this country, belongs only to them.
We have watched keenly, and in dismay, the disturbing claims by these set of people that they do not need others to install a president and that anybody not ready to dance to their tune should do so at their own peril. However, they have been the one dancing naked in the market square as evidenced in all the campaign rallies across the country as our great party, the PDP, has continued to fail to gather enough people at campaign grounds, which has never been so.
The rally here in Akure, the Ondo state capital, was an eyesore as the “crowd” at the campaign ground wasn’t up to half of what we had in 2019, this due to lack of inclusiveness and division among the party State Leadership hierarchy.
As if this is not enough, the aerial view of the Lagos state campaign released on social media leaves a sour taste in our mouth as we wonder how we intend to rescue Lagos from the hold of the man who has turned it to his private estate with such a low turnout at our major rally in the state.
Gentlemen of the press, let us reiterate that the fight for equity, fairness and justice being led by the INTEGRITY governors and supported by all well-meaning leaders of our great party in the southwest is a battle we are ready to see to the end. We can no longer fold our arms and let the utter disrespect for our region continue. We call on the leadership of the PDP to look into the demands of the INTEGRITY group and approve same to prevent the complete destruction of the party before it is too late. We believe, and strongly so, that we can only defeat the incompetent and poverty-minded APC as a united front, as this division in our party, if allowed to get to the election year, will spell doom for us.
It is on this note we call on Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Unifier, to demonstrate his unifying prowess to the whole world by unifying the party and not just live in the euphoria of such a cliché “The Unifier”. He should not allow the unpatriotic people to mislead him and prevent him from achieving his dream of leading this great country, Nigeria.
While appreciating the INTEGRITY group under the leadership of the working governor of Rivers state, His Excellency Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, CON, let me assure them, on behalf of all reasonable youths in our party who are members of this group, that we are solidly behind them.
Let me also put it on record that our support for the reelection of Engr Seyi Makinde in Oyo state is non-negotiable as we are mobilising all resources, human and material, to ensure his victory. He has done well in his first term, and the good people of Oyo state needs a man like him at the helms of affairs for the next four years to complete the good works he has started in the state, same goes to all our National and State Assembly Candidates across the Southwest States.
Ladies and gentlemen, let me end my statement this morning with the words of a former prime minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, which says “in our national discourse and in pursuing our national agenda, we must never leave anyone behind. We must reach out to the many who may have been disaffected and left confused by political games, deceit and showmanship. The people first must transcend every level of society”. I hope Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and those goading him on will ponder on this and act fast to save our party before it is too late.
Thank you, and God bless the People’s Democratic Party.
