Pandemonium In Abuja As Police Clashes With Shi’ites

There was tension in the capital city of Nigeria, the central area of Abuja as the Police made attempts to disrupt the activities of protesting Shi’ites today.

The Nigerian Police were said to have sprayed gas at hundreds of Shiites who were campaigning for the release of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky as they were about entering the National Assembly.

The group’s members arrived the National Assembly main gate at about noon today, and attempted to forcefully enter the compound, but were resisted by security.

A police reinforcement, supported by the Civil Defence, later fired tear gas at the protesters and chased fleeing demonstrators into the neighbouring federal secretariat as they
struggled for air.

The chase, headed towards the national
mosque, created pandemonium as people scampered for safety.
