Nigerian Lawmakers Are Shameless, They Earn Too Much – Prof. Sagay

The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay has again blown hot on the best way the National Assembly can be run to cut unnecessary cost.

Prof. Sagay made a highly debatable revelation in the past week by pointing out that the current lawmakers both at the House of Senate and House of Representatives earn ‘jumbo’ salaries of N29 million each.

The revelation had the Nigerian polity in a fiery standpoint as the National Assembly has not been able to vindicate itself from this criticism.

Speaking at the TVC one-on-one conversation with Sam Omatseye this morning, Sagay suggests that the lawmakers should be made to serve the nation on part-time basis while they return to their respective professions afterwards.

He mentioned that this will drastically reduce the unnecessary and exorbitant cost of governance like their furniture allowance, wardrobe allowance, transport allowance among others but subject them to merely sitting allowances.

He also faulted the earnings of the lawmakers and calls them ‘shameless’ individuals who enjoy luxuries with the taxes of the Nigerian poor.

On if the part-time National Assembly is obtainable, Prof. Itse Sagay buttressed is point by making reference to the First Republic when the likes of Late Chief Obafemi Awolowo acted only on the honor and credit of service to humanity and not the riches in politics. He established that the part-time sitting was operated then while the lawmakers returned to the professions afterwards.
