New Radio Station, Glow 99.1FM Begins Transmission In Akure
A new radio station, Glow 99.1 FM has commenced operation in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The new radio station, situated at Glow FM station house, No. 1, Effon Alaye Street (Former Gani Fawehinmi building), Ijapo Estate, Akure, was commissioned on Wednesday by it Chairman, Dr Ezekiel Akande.
The event had in attendance, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, who was represented by Oba Adekunle Adebowale, the Agbolu of Agbaje Ife; the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade, Odundun II; the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo, Jilo III; the Founder of Prayer Center Church of God, Pastor Samson Oluwamodede; the Chief Imam of Akure Empire, Sheikh AbdulHakeem Akorede; representatives of National Broadcasting Commission, among others.
Dr Akande, a medical Doctor who hails from Akoko North West Local Government Area of Ondo State said he was inspired by God while in the United States of America to come home to Nigeria and establish a radio station and a first class hospital.
The Chairman added that the main reasons for establishing the radio station is to give a voice to disenfranchised people of Ondo state and to create for them a seat at the table where their welfare is being discussed, and by extension the disenfranchised young people of Nigeria who make over 70 percent of Nigeria’s population and have never been empowered.
In his address, the keynote speaker, Dr Gbenga Abimbola , the head of department, Department of Mass Communication, Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko (AAUA) said running a radio station in the current economy situation in Nigeria could be difficult and requires huge finance. He however said for the sustainability of a radio station, qualify professionals must be engaged, free hand must be given to the personnel, the radio station must give voice to the audience irrespective of their political, tribal or religious beliefs and the staff welfare must be prioritized.
The station, which commenced test transmission last week on World Radio Day is currently headed by Ace Broadcaster and former Director of Programmes, Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC), Alhaji Ismail Akinkunmi Ishaq.
