Ikubese Speaks On Leadership
Former Presidential Aspirant and Convener of YesWeFit Revolutionary Movement, Dr Thomas-Wilson Ikubese has admonished political office holders to use their offices as a medium to render services and not as a conduit to accumulate wealth.
He made this assertion while he appeared as a guest on Sunrise Daily, a breakfast current affairs show on Channels Television yesterday.
While asked why he has not been featuring prominently on national discourse as before, he said he has been building capacity behind the scene.
When asked if he felt disappointed that some of the young people with whom he sought a change of the Nigerian political status quo in 2019 eventually went back to collect political appointments from the government, Ikubese said that he was not disappointed because people go into politics for different reasons.
According to him, some go into politics for visibility, as a stepping stone to attain their next level. Others go into politics for money and influence.
In his words, “However, the true purpose of occupying a political office should be to affect the lives of the citizens for good”
He said, when one occupies a political office, the essence is not to better the lives of one’s friends and family, but to better the lives of the citizens in general.
He then went further to explain that, “before you take up a political appointment therefore, you should ask yourself if you can affect the lives of the people positively with that office. If the answer is in the affirmative then you can go ahead and take it up”.
Ikubese further stated that if however one occupies the office and realizes that one’s principal would not allow one to act beneficially for the citizens, it behoves one to resign.
If one should remain in that office and serves out one’s tenure without using that office to positively to affect society, Ikubese stated that such a person is a disappointment to destiny and an enemy of the Nigerian state.
He urged political office holders to see themselves as servants and not masters and should use their office to the benefit of society and not to loot our commonwealth.
