Elections: Only 72 Million Nigerians Can Vote, Says INEC
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that only at least 72 million Nigerians will be able to vote in the forthcoming elections in Nigeria – both at the presidential/national assembly poll and gubernatorial/state house of assemblies poll.
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, chairman of the commission, said this at a press briefing in Abuja as he gave the figure of those that have collected their PVCs from INEC.
He said the 72.7 million Nigerians who have collected their PVCs represent 86.3 percent of the over 84 million
registered voters in the country .
The commission had said the total number of registered voters in the country stand at 84,004,084 — just 42 percent of Nigeria’s population which currently stands at 198 million.
As of the last general election in 2015, 54 million eligible voters collected their PVCs.
