SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE HAS NO TENURE

The curtain was drawn on my tenure as a member of the 9th House of Representatives after the valedictory plenary on Wednesday 7th June. It has been four years of service to the people of Akoko South East/South West Federal Constituency and Nigerians at large. It has been four years of networking, identifying opportunities for constituents, initiating and executing community changing projects and opening doors for the elevation of several young people. It has been a time spent in touching lives in ways I may not have been able to do without the opportunity given me by the people of Akoko South East and South West. My dear eminently worthy people of Akoko South East/South West Federal Constituency, thank you. Thank you very much indeed.

Today, I bow out of that office with pride knowing that I gave my all, from my heart, like the biblical widow who gave her last morsel to feed the servant of God. I did my best to fight your cause, plead your cause and strived to ensure that the powers that be knew the challenges you faced. For four years, your voice was strong, clear, concise and consistent. Where it was possible, I demonstrated your pains so that by seeing, decision makers may feel a part of your pains. To the glory of God, your voice over the last four years was very loud where it needed to be and it was whispered where the need for silent advocacy was needed. I thank each and every member of Akoko South East/ lSouth West Federal constituency for the privilege to be of service.

At the onset of my political journey and years before my emergence as the Member representing the good people Akoko South East and West federal constituency in the National Assembly, I deliberately embarked on life touching projects in some of the communities in my local area. I took the step to pursue the good of the people long before being elected not out of a desire to use it for politics but because I saw the pains of our people and felt the need to intervene to assuage their pains. As I bow out of the House of Representatives, I will continue to render such service to our people in pursuit of my dream of collective prosperity in our land.

For this purpose, I seek that we work together to reintroduce ‘the Politics of Business’ into our lexicon. Whereas the ‘politics of business’ is about initiating, running and sustaining businesses, ‘the business of politics’ as played by most partisans in our realm elevates partisan politics above the prosperity and well being of the people. We cannot make progress if we are not deliberate in our pursuit of the economic well being of our people. The older ones among us who witnessed the ‘cooperatives era’ in Akoko understand the meaning of collective prosperity. They saw it in their youths and they know it brought progress because our forefathers with little education organized themselves into cooperative societies with visions of shared risks, shared rewards and shared prosperity. If our forefathers knew the benefit of collaborations what is stopping younger generations with better education from doing the same?

Over the next few weeks, our vision of engendering cooperative businesses will be actualized with the birth of about five cooperative societies within Akoko South East and South West. We intend to kick-start a few businesses modeled after the cooperative societies of old. Learning from the errors of the past, we will ensure that members of these cooperatives sit together to decide their terms of association, business model, leadership and all other requirements for establishing sustainable jointly owned businesses. We will ensure that members and managers of these cooperatives are trained on business management, book keeping and that joint assets are comprehensively insured to mitigate risks. As evidence of my faith in this scheme, I am working with an agency of note to provide joint assets to kickstart the scheme. God being on our side, these assets shall be delivered to the cooperative businesses in a few weeks.

My dear brothers and sisters, what is the benefit of being the only wealthy person among millions of poor people? What is the benefit of being the only tree in a forest of mushrooms? The time to focus on shared prosperity is now. When we are collectively prosperous, the game of politics will be more interesting. It is not enough that we gather only during elections. We must begin to gather as cooperatives for our own prosperity. Thank you once more for your support, prayers and goodwill over the years. May God bless you and your household.
