FG Declares Operation Amotekun Illegal
The Nigerian government has declared a regional security outfit, Amotekun, formed by states in the South-west geopolitical zone as illegal.
Governors in the region announced the formation of the regional paramilitary outfit last week to complement the work of the police.
A launch of the outfit was held in Ibadan at the event attended by political and traditional leaders across party lines from the South-west.
A Tuesday statement from the minister of justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday said setting up of the organisation “runs contrary to the provisions of the Nigerian law.”
Policing is a federal duty under the exclusive list of the Nigerian constitution.

They should take it to the court. There is no safety of lives and properties where the so called security agents cannot live up to the expectation of their duties in every ramifications. There is no federal democracy where security especially local policing is completely concentrated in the exclusive list. This arrangement has proved to be non-effective, unreliable, nepostic, tribalistic, bureaucratic and subordinating rather than coordinating. As long as it is to foster local security network in the area, it is a welcome venture that all other geopolitical zones should do to assist in securing their lives and properties. It is not about constitutionality, but about effective performance of the major duty of a government that this government has not performed as expected.
