5 Dead, Properties Worth Millions Of Naira Destroyed As APC, PDP Supporters Clash In Cross River
Few hours after the postponement of the presidential and national assembly election, five people have been confirmed dead and properties worth millions of Naira destroyed in Bendeghe Ekem in Etung Local Government Area of Cross River State as supporters of All Progressive Congress and People’s Democratic Party engaged themselves in a battle.
It was gathered that the clash, which led to exchange of gun fire, occurred in Bendeghe-Ekem, the local government area of the All Progressive Congress governorship candidate, Senator Owan Enoh.
Our correspondent gathered that among the people that died were the People’s Democratic Party Ward Chairman, Ayuk Ogar and three of his supporters while in the APC camp, two people died in the fight.
Those who sustained injuries have been rushed to General Hospital in Ikom for medical attention.
Although the leaders of the community had signed Peace Accord, yet supporters of the two major parties engaged themselves in battle of supremacy.
Speaking to newsmen after the incident, Special Assistant to Governor Ayade on Cocoa Development, Oscar Ofuka explained that the crisis occurred just after the peace accord was signed in the community.
Ofuka exprerssed disappointment over the development and wondered why APC supporters should arm themselves with dangerous weapons as if they were prepared for war, lamenting that as a result of this development, the people in the community are living in fear.
Attempt by our correspondent to get police confirmation of the situation was not successful as police spokesperson DSP Irene Ugbo did not respond to several calls made.
