Controversial Firdaus Recalled For ‘Call To Bar’ As Benchers Nullify Barrier

Amasa Firdaus Abdulsalam, a graduate of law at the University of Ilorin has been recalled to have her ‘call to bar’ as the Body of Benchers approved the use of hijab for law activities such as admission and induction.

Body of Benchers is a professional body
concerned with the admission of prospective student into the Nigerian Law School. It also regulates the call of graduates of law school to the Nigerian Bar.

In Dcember 2017, Amasa was disembarked from entering into the International Conference Centre, Abuja for her call to bar.

Her insistence was hinged on the fact that it insults her belief but the Nigerian Law School had maintained that her use of hijab to the occasion breaks their dress code.

This issue brewed sympathy and criticisms against and for across various persons and groups in the country over Amasa’s stance.

Yesterday’s evening, the Benchers approved the use of hijab for the prospective inductees and also invited Amasa to join the new set to be inducted next month, July.

In reaction to this development, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) commended the Body of Benchers for reviewing the case and for allowing professionalism to be the deciding factor.

In a statement signed by the Director of the Islamic group, Ishaq Akintola partly says:

“We are also grateful to the House of Representatives for the positive role it played in the matter.

“We felicitate with all Islamic organisations as well as Muslim brothers and sisters who stood with us all these days, particularly during the aborted public hearing at the National Assembly.”Ameer, The Muslim Congress (TMC), Lukman AbdulRaheem, said: “The news is a victory for procedural justice, rule of law and constitutionalism. Amasa has registered her name as a heroine of Islam.

“She demonstrated faith, patience and steadfastness in the face of harassment of Islamophobes in the Law School.”
