2019 Presidency: Buhari ‘Signals’ Rerun
President Muhammadu Buhari may have put up a gesture that he will join in the race of contesting for President in the 2019 election.
This showed in his speech when the President visited Benue state yesterday as part of his tour to the displaced states of the country caused. As a results of killings by suspected herdsmen and insurgent Boko Haram.
While meeting with Benue stakeholders in Markurdi, the state capital of Benue, Buhari reacted to what was called “shopping list” by some stakeholders.
He enjoined the people of Benue to pray for the economy to improve, saying he would not make any promises during that visit.
“When coming back on campaign, if coming back on campaign, I may promise,” he established.
This may have signalled that the President is being careful of setting the hope of the Benue stakeholders high on promises as he may not achieve them before the current elapses but may consider including that in his 2019 campaign promises, if recontesting may be an option for him.
Recall that, President had once revealed to All Progressive Congress’ Governors, who went to seek his consent for reelection that he would make his intention publicly known to Nigeria as soon he thinks it through but could not ascertain that as at then.
Although Buhari is yet to officially declare if he will be seeking re-election in office or not, his campaign offices have been inaugurated in some parts of the country.
Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, has reportedly been appointed the director-general of his presidential campaign ahead of the 2019 elections.
The President also appealed to leaders of various groups in the state to convince their constituents that the federal government is doing its best to end the recurring attacks by armed herdsmen in various parts of the country.
